Under the authority of the citypolice Geel (Belgium) PROCentrum carried out a case study on driving priority vehicles responding to a code 1 (code 3 US) situation.
Goal
Develop an objective risc inventarisation towards the use of light and sirens while responding to an emergency call and translate this into an educational method for risc awareness. Subsidiary the following objectives were formulated:
- improve risk perception amongst drivers of emergency vehicles
- preventing loss or damage on emergency vehicles
- reducing vehicle costs
- improving imag
To log data we used the information of several cameras, the motormanagement, heartrate transponders and GPS. After the tests all data was analysed and incorporated in a report.
Although the number of participants in this case study was limited and the results may therefore not be regarded as generic for the target group we noticed that the drivers of the emergency vehicle showed an increased risc acceptance while responding to a code 1 (code 3 US) call. It seemed that the drivers already anticipated to what they expected other road users might do. Furthermore the heart rate of the drivers raised considerably while driving with lights and signals.
Meanwhile PROCentrum has presented a complete report including conclusions and recommendations to the chief of citypolice Geel.
